Produce
As Whatcom County’s only certified organic produce departmentwith more than 80 percent of our fresh produce organically grownthe Co-op’s commitment to organics is most easily seen in this department. In addition, our produce buyers are committed to buying local produce as it is seasonally available. Whatcom Fresh, a consortium of local farmers, is a program devoted to bringing you closer to those in the community who grow your food, and local produce is identified on all signs when produce is grown locally, whether organic or conventionally grown.
From a 20-year association with the Growing Garden to encouraging new farmers every year, the produce department works directly with nearly 40 local farmers, helping to build and sustain local and organic agriculture. With our extensive growing season, you’ll see local produce year round. You’ll also find the more exoticfrom mango and papaya to tamarind pods and cherimoya.
In the spring, you can’t miss the enticing array of
garden starts outside in front of the store, from basil and
parsley to tomatoes and artichokes. Inside the door, look
for the more tender varieties of garden plants as well as
indoor plants and flowers. Cut flowers are available year
round.

Community Supported Agriculture
Every spring the Co-op encourages members to "buy local"
by supporting local farmers who offer shares in their Community
Supported Agriculture program to Whatcom County consumers.
We compile and share a list of CSA farms and details about
their programs in our April newsletter. Print the 2005
CSA list here or pick up a handout at the service desk.
